Inclusive Specials Series: Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners
Riverside Learning is proud to offer the Inclusive Specials Series, a collection of professional learning book studies designed specifically for educators who teach, support, and advocate for students in specialized content areas. These book studies recognize an important reality: every student deserves meaningful access to learning, participation, creativity, movement, and belonging—regardless of ability or learning need.
Through this series, educators will explore practical, classroom-ready strategies for creating more inclusive experiences for diverse learners. Participants will engage with the selected text, reflect on their own professional practice, examine strategies and examples, and consider how the ideas presented can be applied directly to their own classrooms, programs, and school communities.
The series includes book studies focused on:
Physical Education — adapting activities, increasing participation, and creating inclusive movement experiences
Music — supporting students with differences and disabilities through accessible and responsive music instruction
Art — using inclusive techniques to ensure all students can participate in meaningful creative experiences
Library Media — applying Universal Design for Learning to create more inclusive, accessible, and empowering library spaces
Each book study is designed to move beyond simply reading a book. Participants will connect the author's ideas to their own work, identify practical strategies they can implement, reflect on challenges and opportunities within their setting, and develop actionable takeaways for supporting diverse learners. Participants read the selected portion of the text, watch supplemental videos, read supplemental articples, or review supplemental websites and write a reflection based on the prompt. There are no assignments, tests, papers, projects, presentations, etc.
Professional Learning That Recognizes Your Work
Riverside Learning is especially proud to offer this series to specialists and educators working in areas that are sometimes overlooked in professional learning conversations about inclusion. PE teachers, music educators, art teachers, library media specialists, and other specialists play an essential role in ensuring that students with diverse learning needs have opportunities to participate, contribute, create, collaborate, and experience success.
We also recognize that educators are balancing the important work of professional growth with Massachusetts relicensure and professional development requirements. The Inclusive Specials Series provides an opportunity to engage in meaningful professional learning while earning 15 PDPs connected to the important work of meeting the needs of diverse learners.
